Flowers of the Canyon Country by Stanley L. Welsh and Bill Ratcliffe is a publication of Brigham Young University Press and is being sold at our offices for the price of $4.95. It contains 54 pages and one hundred color photographs of the spectacular flora of this arid, sun-baked region whose quiet dignity attracts thousands thou-sands of hikers, explorers, and photographers every year. The combined talents of photographer Ratcliffe and botanist Welsh has brought about a book that is full of delightful things to see and read. The text is easy to understand, providing common com-mon and scientific names of each flower, useful information informa-tion on characteristics and habitat, and family designation designa-tion for quick identification. The photographs supply accurate accu-rate detail and glorious natural beauty. Together, they make up a book that is at once informative, useful, and artistic. artis-tic. The scope of this book demonstrates the professional skills of two men. Photographer Photograph-er Bill Ratcliffe spent two years working on the Walt Disney production Perri, a wildlife feature photographed in the Uinta and Teton mountains. Mr. Ratcliffe's work has appeared in Audu bon magazine and calendars, Reader's Digest, Arizona Highways, National Wildlife, Pacific Discovery, American Forests, and in such book publications as the Encyclopedia Encyclo-pedia Britanica, Thorndike-Barnhardt Thorndike-Barnhardt Dictionary, and many more. Stanley L. Welsh started collecting plants in the Uinta Basin in 1953. From his extensive collections between 1955 and 1957 at the Dinosaur National Monument, he was able to complete a Master of Science degree at Brigham Young University. He has collected botanical information and specimens throughout the Great Plains from the Texas Panhandle to Canada. Dr. Welsh completed his Ph.D. at Iowa State University in 1960. |
