Show GOP Convention Saturday Harrowed Candidate List A Grand County candidate for 2-year County Commissioner Commis-sioner moved a step closer to his goal Saturday when he eliminated his opponent from the campaign by garnering . more than 70 per cent of the delegate vote at the County GOP convention. Leo Burr, Moab service station operator, out-polled Rodney Dalton at the convention, conven-tion, and thus will not have a Primary election contest. In the race for the four-year County Commission post, however, challenger Nellie Beyeler was edged in the voting by incumbent Harvey Merrell, but Commissioner Merrell did not get the 70 per cent of the vote necessary to eliminate her from contention. Seventy-six delegates, plus a host of state and national candidates filled Star Hall Saturday for nearly three hours of convention activities. Chairman Connie Caouette : extended a welcome to those in attendance and named Sam Taylor as convention chairman to conduct the remaining activities. Candidates for state and national office all spoke briefly to the assembled delegates, and then spent considerable time individually talking to delegates as votes for county commission races were counted. coun-ted. Candidates for U.S. Senate who spoke here Saturday included Desmond Barker, Sherman P. Lloyd, Orin Hatch, Clinton Miller and Jack Carlson. Candidates for U.S. Congress were Calvin Black, Joe Ferguson and Steven Nielson. The three Republican candidates candi-dates for Utah Governor were also in attendance. They were Dixie Leavitt, Stanley Smoot and Utah Attorney General Vernon B. Romney. Those running for Lt. Governor were David S. Monson and William DunnT who also spoke. Other state candidates who spoke included: For Attorney General: Loren D. Martin and Robert B. Hansen (represented here by attorney Harry E. Snow). For State Auditor: Richard Jensen and Duane Beck. For State Treasurer: Golden Allen, Mark Haroldson and Stan Darger (represented by his daughter Ann Darger Hatch). Also appearing briefly before be-fore the convention were the two Republican candidates for Utah House of Representatives Representa-tives for the district including Grand, Emery and East Carbon, Kenneth A. Silliman and Horace Petty. After the voting for the two County Commission posts, the convention named a list of thirteen delegates to the State GOP convention to be held in July. That list includes Chairman Caouette, Vice Chairman Mary Ma-ry Byrd; along with Robert and Yvonne Hawks, Phyllis Cortes, Greg Christensen, D. L. Taylor, David Allen, Sam Taylor, Shawn Meador, Harvey Har-vey Merrell, Cleve Raymond and Bette Jeffries. All but the chairman and vice chairman were designated for these posts at mass meetings held in May. A large number of Moab area residents, who were not delegates, attended the convention con-vention and listened to the nearly two hours of speech making. |
