Show community comments... Americans throughout the land will have the opportunity, this year, to participate personally In a mammoth salute to the 4th of July. Bicentennial celebration leaders are encouraging communities, communi-ties, businesses, organizations and individuals to fly the United States Flag continuously for 21 days from Flag Day (June 14) through Independence Day (July 4th). Participation by people in villages, cities and towns throughout the United States of America will produce a nationwide display of colors never before equaled in our history. In addition, a simultaneous nationwide ringing of bells for two minutes on July 4th will herald the signing of our Declaration of Independence. Communities, churches, schools and individuals will toll bells and carillons In conjunction with the ringing of the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia at 2:00 p.m., Eastern Daylight Time 12 noon in Moab. The time selected is exactly 200 years from the precise moment that the Liberty Bell proclaimed the Independence of our Nation, and I hope that Moab's few remaining bells, seldom heard, will Join In that chorus. The time to get your flag, polehalyard, bell, etc., ready is now. We urge every person within reach of this newspaper to join enthusiastically In this great and wonderful celebration. sit Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Phil Barney of Moab survived a harrowing experience last Wednesday while doing his lonely and dangerous Job on Interstate 70, and I'm sure the entire community Joins this corner in extending our thanks and appreciation, not only to Barney, but also to all his colleagues who are willing to maintain law and order on Southeastern Utah's long and oft-times empty highways. . . This Incident, and others similar to it during the past few years, points to a need for Increased staffing in these remote sections of the state. All too often, single troopers are faced with car-loads of persons who need to be questioned, and often apprehended. Two troopers in a car, or back-up cars within quick - calling distance could make a real difference. Serious thought should be given by the Utah Public Safety Department in . providing the back-up necessary to make this task a little less dangerous. sit ' I'm glad the Community Development Board didn't come up with the extra money to bring in an outside expert to handle the chores as full time director. Dixie Barker, long associated with - Chamber of Commerce and Industrial Promotion activities was named to the post, and will have a running start over anyone from outside, even though they might have more book-learning in the finer points of promotional administration. Whenever expertise for a particular task can be found locally, it should be utilized. The old addage that an expert is a guy Just like you from out of town Just doesn't hold true. I'm sure Dixie will be tremendously successful as Community bevelopment Director over the next few years, and wish her well in the job. sit I'm batching this week while the family is visiting relatives in Arizona, and it isn't really easy to slip back into the role that once seemed so comfortable. ' Plenty of clean socks and shirts were left, along with enough goodies to keep me eating for a week, but It's the other tasks that take the time. Feeding two dogs, two cats, a gerbil and a tankful of fish; watering house plants, hanging baskets, four lawns and a garden; filling the hummingbird feeder and mowing the grass Is a whole lot more time-consuming than I'd imagined. . ! Frankly, I'll be glad when the week is over. |
