Show Moab Navy Man Cited For Heroism at San Diego sax dip:go May 25 Navy IVtty Officer Second Class Steven K. I'uttcr, sun of Mr. and Ms. Karl Oliver Oliv-er of 8:i F.. Center, Moah, Utah, was awarded th'3 Navy and Marine Corps Medal at the Naval Station San Oiej'O. Ho was citou for heroism as a corpsman with the rescue res-cue squad ambulance at the San Dietfo Naval Station. Sta-tion. On Oct. 11 1070, the rescue .squad was called to the destroyer USS Duncan to remove a man who had been overcome by toxic vapors va-pors and lack of oxygen 'from a lube oil storage tank. Arriving on the scone shortly after the rescue squad, 1'etty Officer Put-tcr Put-tcr donned an oxygen breathing apparatus (OBA) and entered the tank to assist as-sist the man. After discovering discov-ering that he could not fit in the tank while weaii' 1he apparatus, and knowing know-ing that speed was essen tial in saving the man, he discarded the OBA and entered en-tered the tank despite the .strong toxci vapors. He worked his way into the small compartment where the man was and pushed him out into a space near the access hole where the rescue squad could reach him. After the victim hnd been rescued Petty Officer Putter made his way back towards the access hole. By this time, he had become dizzy and required assistance to free himself from the tank. |
