A. Barnes One of the couples - on the popular west coast television te-levision show, "Dating Game," was awarded an all-expense "dating" trip to the canyonlands country around, Moab, Utah, over the long Memorial Day weekend. The young couple, Jana Gegavske, 19, Patrick Klip-per, Klip-per, 19, and their chaper-one, chaper-one, Kathe Cuhna, arrived in Moab by air last Friday evening. They were officially offici-ally welcomed by Mr. Blaine Shields, president of the Moab Chamber of Commerce, Mrs. Jacquie Gelo, chairwoman of the iCanyonlands Publicity Council, and an assortment assort-ment of Moab citizens. Jana attends Santa Monica Mon-ica College in southern California Ca-lifornia and is planning a career as a physical education educa-tion teacher or a physical therapist. Pat is studying psychology psycho-logy at West Los Angeles Junior College. Kathe, cha-perone cha-perone of the Dating Game couple, is an employee of. CBP Productions, producers produc-ers of the television show.. The itinerary planned for the couple and their cTiaperone was quite di- verse. Saturday morning they were flown to Green, River, where they embarked embark-ed as honored gueste on hte first leg of the Annual Friendship Cruise down, the Green River and back up the Colorado to Moab. In midafternoon, they were-picked were-picked up at the mouth of Mineral Canyon and flown, back to Moab that evening, then were treated to a Canyonlands By Night lights-and-sound river cruise crui-se after dark. On Sunday, the three were first given a scenic air tour over Canyonlands National Park by Pilot Dick Smith, then a jeep ride to famous Angel Arch with Canyonlands Tours, and finally a horseback ride in scenic Castle Valley Val-ley followed by an old-fashioned old-fashioned barbecue and campfire sing at Hoffman's Castle Valley aRnch. Monday, the young couple coup-le and their chaperone were taken on a tour of the White Rim, Shafer Trail and Island - in - the - Sky in Canyonlands National Park by Tag-A-Long Tours. After an afternoon spent brousing through Moab gift shops and resting from1 their tiring three-day visit, the three-departed by air. It soon became apparent to those hosting the California Cali-fornia trio that all- three were strictly city born and raised. They were definitely definit-ely not experienced an the kind of activities to which they were being exposed during their canyonlands "date." By the end of their visit, the continual excite-iment excite-iment and physical strain of the various outdoor activities, ac-tivities, plus. the long hours and nervous tension of being be-ing "on -stage" constantly, had all three visitors in a state of near collapse. The personal reactions of the Dating Game couple cou-ple to the canyonlands scenery sce-nery and activities was en-( thusiiastic. Both commented comment-ed that they hoped to be a.ble to return later for a more leisurely visit. One highlight of the trip came toward the end of a horseback ride in Cfistle Valley, as an armed and realistically costumed band of men staged a planned ambush on the return trail not far from the Hoffman Ranch. Don Hoffman had "set up" the innocent couple cou-ple by showing them some old-west graves nearby and by mentioning that cattle .rustling still occurred lo-'Cally. lo-'Cally. Thus, when some very grim looking men appeared, appear-ed, with pistols and shotguns shot-guns pointed ominously, claming that Hoffman was lusing stolen horses and demanding instant justice, ail three Californians were horrified and thoroughly convinced of the reality of the scene. Their conviction convic-tion lasted until, as captives, cap-tives, they were hearded onto the ranch, which they quickly recognized as Hoffman's. Hoff-man's. Back at the ranch, with the horrible reality of the ambush faded into the hilarious hilar-ious relief, everyone pitched pitch-ed in to stage a mock trial of "horsethief Hoffman" and his cohorts. Jana, Pat and Kathe were "sentenced" "sentenc-ed" to eat a barbecue dinner din-ner with the sixty-odd guests at the ranch, and Hoffman was "sentenced" ito hang. After a highly melodramatic hanging with big hemp noose and all, judge, jury, courtroom-crowd, courtroom-crowd, prisoners and the hanged man all joined in the barbecue and campfire entertainment. |
