Show Freedom and Responsibility Lectures Planned for Moab Residents A special series of open op-en community discussions, discus-sions, the Freedom and Responsibility series, begins in Moab on Thurs. January 11, at 7:00 p.m. at the Junior High. The series will take up problems pro-blems of contemporary interest on an international, internat-ional, national, and local level as it deals with questions of Freedom of Expression, Freedom from Want, and Freedom from Fear. The weekly programs are sponsored by the College of Humanities, Human-ities, Arts & Social Sciences and the Extension Exten-sion Services of Utah State University, and by the National Endowment for the Humanities. "We believe we have organized a first-rate series," says T.Y. Booth, project director. "The local people I have met seem to find the possibilities possib-ilities interesting, and certainly we at the University Un-iversity will listen carefully care-fully to what you have to say-we feel we need to get out of our class-, rooms and talk to the citizens of the state directly dir-ectly on matters of human hu-man values which affect us all." Program I, "Freedom and Responsibility in Expression:" Ex-pression:" An Historical Perspective, will be presented pre-sented by F. Ross Peterson, Pet-erson, an historian at-Utah at-Utah State University. In the presentation on Jan. 11, Dr. Peterson will discuss dis-cuss something of the difficulties dif-ficulties that individuals and societies have had over the centuries in maintaining the "precarious "precar-ious balance" between freedom and responsibility. responsibil-ity. "Why," he asks, "Do we have the tendency to idolize the individual rebel reb-el in the past but fear him in the present?" The program will begin be-gin with a film taken from the 'Profiles in Courage' television series of some years ago. This particular partic-ular segment deals with the community concern about and trial of Anne Hutchinson, a colonial Boston woman who insisted in-sisted on freedom of conscience. con-science. Following the presentation presen-tation by Dr. Peterson, the local participants will be given their say on the ideas represented, and will examine among themselves whether the principles apply to local situations at the present time. There will be eight other ot-her programs in this series ser-ies which will meet on succeeding Thursdays at the same time and place. Everyone in Moab and its surrounding areas is invited to attend and take part. Those persons who wish to take the course for credit should plan to register. There will be no charge for admission. |
