Show IActivities jj The Cub Scouts and Webe-los Webe-los of Moab Third Ward held ' : their traditional Pinewood Derby, Thursday, March 31. The pinewood derby is a wooden car race where the boys are given a kit which contains a block of wood, axles, and wheels. They and their fathers then work together to-gether to carve a car out of the block of wood, and attach the wheels and axles. The thing they try to do is make the car weigh as close to 5 oz as possible but they can't weigh over that. The boys then race their cars on a wooden track two at a time. The winners of the pinewood pine-wood derby cub scout division were: first place to Mark Walker; second place to Craig Simpson; and third place to Gary Mackelprang. The win ners of the webelos division were: first place to Mike Simpson; second place to Jeff Hansen, and third place to Gregg Bah ling. The two first place winners then ran against each other to determine determ-ine a grand champion, and that grand champion was Mark Walker. There were also awards given for Best Design which went to Mike Simpson, and Most Original which went to Mark Walker. Judges Choice went to Marvin Lewis. The High School Wood Shop helped carve the awards which were wooden plaques to hang on their walls. The race was pretty exciting excit-ing because each boy had plenty of chances to win considering it was a double elimination race. |
