Show Devils Triumph After 32-26 Victorv Over Sfate Champion Delta The Moab Red Devils capped an exciting Homecoming Homecom-ing Week at Grand County High School Wednesday evening, even-ing, by defeating the highly-touted highly-touted Delta Rabbits by a score of 32 to 26. to end a fantastic 21-game winning streak by the Rabbits. The Devils, victims in two A enmcs out of the 21-game win total, including last year's State Championship tilt, played play-ed flawless ball all night, though pitted against a team that-outweighed them by big margins in every position. Moab drew first blood shortly after the contest began, when Don Flynn caught a Greg Larscn pass and r went in for the 1 L. The point alter was booted by Jay Bohn. The Devils scored again a few minutes later, when Larsen fired a six-yard pass to Nick Chavez, making the score 13-0. Early in the second quarter. Delta quarterback Roger Ashby found a weak hole in the Moab pass defense, and rifled a 55-yard pass to Steve Nickle. which went on in for the touchdown. Not to be denied. Sophomore Sopho-more quarterback, Greg Larsen Lar-sen threw a 58-yard bomb to Mike Zimmerman, giving the Devils a 19-6 half-time lead. Moab's defense held the Rabbits down to a slim handful of first downs during the first half. Following the mid-point, Delta came back like the state championship team should, and marched quickly down-field down-field for an early score. Grinding out four to six yards a play, Delta couldn't be stopped, stop-ped, and had Moab faltered, fumbled or miscued at that point, the ball game could have been all over. They didn't, though. Moab's fullback, full-back, Randy Stubblefield be gan finding holes for yardage which earned him a quick touchdown. Bohn converted, making the score 26 for Moab. Although Delta managed to score twice more in the second half, they weren't able to stop the Moab running and passing game, led by Stubblefield, who added two more TD's before the half ended, though plagued with a leg cramp which had him on the sidelines rubbing and stretching every other play. Moab's statistics were impressive im-pressive in the big win over Delta. Sophomore Quarterback Quarter-back Greg Larsen threw the ball 26 times, and completed 14 of the passes. Moab picked up 26 first downs to 20 for the visitors, and although Delta picked up a few more yards rushing than Moab, Stubble-field's Stubble-field's 19 carries which gained him a total of 124 yards during the game topped the list. Jeff Meador. all-around junior gridder. was called on for the first time this season to do the punting chores, and he booted three of them 1 15 yards for an averate of 38.3 yards per kick. Moab's defense had to be playing above its potential all night. The tough line play of lightweights (compared to Delta) Steve Hawks. Mike and Todd Zimmerman, Iley Copeland, Cope-land, Jeff Meador, Randy Stewart and Trent Garcia, was given a big assist from the even-lighter secondary to hold the Delta team down, despite their heavier weights. Coach Glen Richeson, who has for years gotten the very most from his usually small Red Devil gridders, was excited about the victory. "We got the advantage with three early scores, and our victory tightened up the league race," he said. This week Moab will face unbeaten Juab on the Nephi school's field. The game is scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday. Juab, haven already beaten Millard (a team which beat Moab two weeks ago) is being touted as state championship material, and Moab's work is all cut out. The Devils have to win the remainder of their games this season, and they are all tough, to stay in the race.
