Show Letters From Our Readers . . . Dear Editor: The La Sal Mountains and surrounding area have enticed us to come twenty-two hundred hun-dred miles and purchase a :our-wheel drive vehicle. What s great disappointment to start up Geyser Pass and find HOGARDS in the road. Our next trip was to take La Sal Pass past Pack Creek Ranch and what do we find? More hogards. The scenery was so beautiful we felt we :ould withstand the hogards; but after leaving Medicine Lake to complete the trip to Highway 46 the road was ilmost unbearable. There is no possible useful purpose to lave such obstructions." The nogards were over six ' feet ligh and as soon as you topped sne there was another to cross jsing four-wheel drive. Is this using our tax dollars wisely? Do the government people realize that if the public sn't allowed to utilize and ;njoy the land under their management they would be without jobs as they would not be needed? This isn't just a local complaint. The same is happening hap-pening to other National Parks and Recreation Areas. In the Great Smokey Mts. there is a Foothill Road circling the entire park. In the near future the public will not be allowed to drive in the National Park at all. The public will park their cars at designated parking area and board a bus to tour the mountains. Is this what you want? Now is the time to speak out. Don't wait as there isn't much time left to let your voice be heard. K. Samuelsen Moab To the Editor: When one has a deep sense of gratitude to thousands of people, the expression of that gratitude becomes a very real need. May we call upon your paper for yet another service to us. The Gubernatorial campaign cam-paign has been without question ques-tion an extremely taxing five months for the Leavitt family. We have learned that it is possible to expend the kind of efforts we made only because so many hundreds of people are willing to give their time and financial assistance, their help and encouragement. We have received such an outpouring of kindness and support from so many caring people that we find it impossible to think of ourselves our-selves as having "lost." We are grateful for your time, and many of you have spent untold hours organizing grass roots efforts in contacting contact-ing people or performing countless other necessary tasks in our behalf. We are grateful for your financial contributions and we hope sincerely that you will feel that it was worthwhile even though we were not victorious. We are grateful for your expressions of concern for our welfare and we are most sincerely grateful for your votes. It is heartwarming to have received the majority of votes in 20 of 29 counties, and especially the overwhelming majority from our own people. You have accorded us great honor and we shall strive to continue to be worthy of trust and to contribute wherever and whenever we may. Sincerely, Dixie and Anne Leavitt and Family Dear Sam, This letter is pertaining to the J. C. Gift Books, which everyone that bought them thought they have been taken. Well, let me tell my side of the story, as well as some of the others, who didn't know what they were getting into, the merchants who weren't taken last time around, and especially especial-ly the live ones that donated food and (our-my) valuable time. Time is money for me, and food, even at one free for one at full price, can cost a bundle. Now, I ask, how many of you readers would donate several hundred dollars to a gift book idea that you weren't aware of the outcome? Let me clarify this. If they had sold the 1,950 books they planned to sell in this area (I donated thinking it would only be 40 or 50 which wouldn't have been so bad), but okay. 1,950 men's hair cuts at $4.50 $8775.00; 1,950 women's hair cuts at $4.50 $8775.00 and 1 pt. Basic H by Shaklee $2613.00. Total: $20,163.00. This is what it would have cost me, but as it was, they sold 350 books, and it will only cost me $3,150.00 in time on hair cuts, and $499.00 for Shaklee Basic H. This is my story, and at the price of food, I'm certain that the merchants offering steaks, chicken, pizza, sandwiches sand-wiches and salads could tell a few stoHes, too. I don't feel that I am out of line asking the people with the Basic H coupons to come to a meeting to get acquainted with the wonderful products Shaklee has to offer. Also, I am not trying to get out of doing the hair cuts for free but, there is no possible way I can get in 650 haircuts in 5'A months with the holiday season coming up. I have been in business in Moab twenty years and no one can honestly say I have ever cheated anyone and I intend to do the very best I can but I'm not a magician. I had a lady in the chair who has been in business for 40 years in Moab and has been very successful and she didn't get the message either when I donated. I thought it was because I was busy, but they just talked fast. She was shocked at the Rip-Off when I told her about it. To top it all off. Every day I have two or three of these free hair cuts that tie up my time on my appointment book who don't show up. and if it continues, I will do no more hair cuts, so ladies, you owe it to the other purchasers of the Gift Books to be prompt and keep your appointments. My time is money and very precious so please come when you have appointments. Thank you, Sam, 1 hope this letter will make all of the purchasers feel a little better about their small rip-off compared to the loss of the merchants involved are exper-; exper-; iencing. It wouldn't seem so bad if the JC's had gotten more than just one dollar for each book. Sincerely, Betty Beck Betty's Vogue Beauty Salon & Betty's Shaklee Distributor Dear Sam: U.P.&L. charges a customer a $20 deposit for electric service. The City of Moab charges a $25 deposit for water, sewer, and garbage service. But the Utah Gas Service Company is now charging a $120 deposit for natural gas service! This seems to us to be an unreasonable and exhorba- I t C A1 tant deposit. And from 0llr f experience we find it fcJ jfi turned some people away fro-, C(0 settling in Moab. m (J1 Can we assume that th, it Utah Gas Service ComrT ,! has at least 1,000 hook L ttl where deposns are re If so this mean ithe gas , pany has $120,000 of custom $ ers money on deposit. And if jil, they are paying only 7 . interest on this money, thev it are paying less than the prime ' rate of interest for the use nf this $120,000! . 1 Isn't this a problem for the in Chamber of Commerce to investigate? Isn't this also matter for the licensing and i franchise divisions of the City ,t and County to check into and i correct by revising franchises ' as necessary? And isn't this something for every progress- i ive and fair minded citizen and businessman to be aware of., especially if the exhorbitam charge stifles our natural I ! growth and discourages the ! influx of good people, retirees ' and others.
