Show Identify Sfill being Sought Following Saturday Death Identity is still not known of a man who was shot and killed by Highway Patrolman Robert Low and San Juan Deputy Verl Green after the mini pulled a gun on the two lawmen during a routine check of the car driven by the man. Green and Low were just arriving at LaSal Junction last Saturday when the man came out of a bar there and got into his car. The officers, noting the California license plates on the car, decided to stop the man to check the registration and to examine him for possible DWI. They pulled the car over about one mile east of LaSal Junction and as Low approached approach-ed the car to ask for information, infor-mation, the man pulled a gun on the trooper and told him to "get his hands up and tell his partner to get out of the car." Low looked back at Green and saw that the deputy dep-uty had drawn his gun and was aiming at the driver of the car. Low then jumped behind be-hind the car just as Green fired the first shot. The unknown un-known man had leaned back below the seat lo be out of Green's line of fire. Low then moved to the right side of the car where he thought the man would exit from the vehicle. Low then fired two shots into the car. Following the shooting, the man's gun was found about one foot from the car. The hammer was back and ready to be fired, although no shot had been fired by the suspect. He was hit in the left wrist, the right ring finger, the top of the head, had a superficial wound in the left ribs and his hat had a hole in the top. No identification which belonged to the man was found on the body. The car had been stolen in an armed robbery from Arthur W. Smith in Los Angeles, California. Cal-ifornia. Officers are presently searching for a clue as to the man's identity. Officer Low had just returned re-turned to full duty a few weeks ago following his recovery recov-ery from a gunshot wound received in a routine check of a stopped car near Mon-ticello. Mon-ticello. He lives in Monticello. Deputy Green is a veteran officer with the San Juan Sheriff's Department, currently cur-rently assigned to the LaSal area of the county. |
