Moss (R Utah) Tuesday took his continuing con-tinuing fight to get money to (build roads in Canyonlands (National Park to the floor of the Senate. He offered an amendment ,to the interior appropriations appropria-tions bill to add $1,000,000 to tbe used exclusively for roads in Canyonlands. The amendment was defeated, de-feated, but Senator Moss said he would continue nis battle later this session when the supplemental appropriations ap-propriations bill is consider-(ed. consider-(ed. In a senate speech. Senator Sen-ator Moss scored the Nixon administration for not re- guesting "one penny" for Canyonlands roads. "When Canyonlands was established es-tablished in 19G4, five years 'tgo, one of the main arguments argu-ments in favor of the bill was that it would allow the (National Fark Service to op-("n op-("n up this spectacular and inagnicificent area to the public. "We have finally worked .out an agreement with tiie Park Service on the road (rom Squaw Flat and the confluence through Cyclone Canyon and Devils Lane, but without money, the agreement ag-reement will not help much." The Senator pointed out that the Park Service has five year development plan for Canyonlands, calling far expenditure between now and 1974 of $2,889,000 in roads and trails. "Your amendment to the committee was one of 250 which we received and had to reject. Yours was the only on-ly request we had for additional addi-tional funds for Canyonlands There was no back-up testimony testi-mony from the Interior Department, De-partment, none from any other source, so that is one reason why we had to reject re-ject it," senator Bible said. |
