Show Pirate Nevis . . . By Royd Hart The Pirates' opening game against the Dove Creek Bulldogs, Bull-dogs, turned out to be a squeaker. In the first half of the game, the Bulldogs, capitalized on the Pirates' mistakes and made two touchdowns and kicked one extra point bringing the score to 0-13. In the second half the Pirates' came on like a whole new team. Halfback Randy Stubblefield, hammered his way through the line time after time, and with the help of Fullback Allen Burns, brought the ball to the five yard line. On the fourth down and goal to go with Dove Creek's defense concentrating on Stubblefield, St-ubblefield, Quarterback Brad Burr, snuck around the end to make the score 6-13. Tom Maughn, caught some fantastic passes and took the ball downfield, then Brad Burr, connected with T. Ross, in the end zone to bring the score to 12-13. In the fourth quarter with five minutes left on the clock j and fourth down, Tim Vetere, chopped back for a fake punt and hit Kam Weihing, with a perfect pass for a forty yard touchdown bomb. The Pirates, never could have done it without the rest of the offense and defense made up of Kyle -Ekker, Lynn Hunt, Mitch Vetere, Bob Holloway, Terry Johnson, Scott Banasky, Bart Hansen, and Trace Spadafora, who intercepted a pass. T. Ross, also intercepted two passes. Temporary lines were layed so that the Pirates, could use their new scoreboard and crow's nest for the first game but they will soon be made permanent. Coach Bacon, was pleased with the Pirates performance, and feels that with one more week of practice on their timing, they will be ready for San Juan. For the past year the Band Mothers, have been striving to collect the five thousand dollars, they needed so the band could get new uniforms, and the day has finally come.
