Show Devils Take Second Contest With 38-14 Win Over Emery By Don Robinson "The score was not indicative indica-tive of the closeness of the game," goes the old, trite description of what appears to be a lopsided score. It's nevertheless true of Moab's second straight grid victory over a tough Emery High School team. The game actually didn't seem to be in doubt after the first quarter when Moab led 16-6, but the two teams continued to race up and down the real estate for the entire game. Moab was quicker and struck more often and that was the story. The Devils wasted little time getting up on the board. On the third play of the game and with only one minute twenty seconds elapsed, Moab's Jay Johnson broke loose on a 46 yard gallop to score. Ken Bohn threw to Merrill Noyes for the two point conversion. Emery stormed back on Jensen's passing, reaching the Moab 33 yard line. There the Devils held until a fourth down and 11 yard to go situation saw the defense lag and Jack Fielder romped all the way for six. Emery couldn't push their conversion across. The teams exchanged punts before Moab scored again. The points came this time on a 15 yard pass, Bohn to Don Flynn. Flynn didn't get as much action this week, but had another fine game. Noyes crushed into the end zone for a secont two point conversion. A recovered fumble by senior Tracy Tibbetts set up yet another Moab score. Johnson, Noyes and Bohn ate up most of 44 yards and Noyes capped with a three yard spurt ' into paydirt. The kick failed but it didn't look like the Devils needed it. They were back minutes later in the second quarter. This time it was a long drive of 75 yards that looked to be stopped, but provided one of the big moments of the game. Stalled on their own 49 yard line, Moab went into punt formation. forma-tion. A short snap, however, came back to fullback Noyes who broke straight up the middle, wiped out two would-be would-be tacklers and raced 51 yards to score. Noyes added two points and Moab had a 30 to 6 cushion. Emery threatened briefly before the half, but Moab was able to halt them. Jack Fielder, the Spartans' best looking back, was injured in the drive on a shattering tackle (he had several) by Mark Roberts. The second half saw Emery threatening again as they drove to the Moab four yard line. Jensen's passing to Ken Bunderson highlighted the drive. Once in possession of the ball, Moab kept it and drove 96 yards using the whole backfield. Flynn's 45 yard gallop was the big gainer, but the points came when Bohn threw to Marlyn Wyatt for 19 yards. That was the end of the offensive points. Emery stole a page from Moab's book to get their second score. They used a fake 5 punt successfully to set up a 35 yard pass, Jensen to Bunderson Bunder-son for six points. The same combo added the final two points. Moab's defense, which had been embarassed, got the final two points. Wyatt dropped a punt dead on the Spartans' six inch line. Emery couldn't ; budge the Devils and on the ; attempted punt the ball went out of the end zone for a two ', point safety. ; Moab outgained Emery by ! only 100 yards despite the i score. Coach Glen Richeson I said it flatly, "Our defense I broke down." Emery held J Merrill Noyes to "only" 176 X yards, but paid the price in injured players. Emery gained 160 yards passing which will be remembered in practice this week, according to Rich- eson. |
