Show Moab Artist Wins Award of Merit At Tough Vernal Art Show Moab artist Arleen Rugged accepted a major award for one of her paintings from Gov. Calvin L. Rampton Wednesday in Vernal. The Award of Merit, carrying car-rying with it a $50 cash prize was one of only three given in the annual Dinosaurland Art Festival currently showing show-ing at the Little Gallery of Arts in Vernal. Mrs. Ruggeri characterizes character-izes the Vernal show as the toughest in the area, and pointed out that of 106 paintings paint-ings submitted, just 37 were chosen to compete. Each artist ar-tist was allowed to submit three entries, and of all the artists showing there, Mrs. Ruggeri was one of only two who had all three entries accepted ac-cepted for competition. Her winning watercolor, "Off Main," is a back street scene in Telluride, Colorado, which recently won a first place award for her in th'-Grand th'-Grand Junction show. Best of Show, with a $100 award, went to Dennis Pap-worth, Pap-worth, Springville, for his acrylic, "Red Rock at Dia-. Dia-. mend Fork." The Outstand ing Uintah Basin Aritst aw--ard was given to Mary Patterson, Pat-terson, Vernal for an acrylic "Happening." The two other Awards of Merit were won by Douglas Lee, Salt Lake City, for an acrylic, "Reflections "Re-flections in Cycles," and by Valoy Eaton, Salt Lake City, for an oil, "Mountain Ranch." Juror for the festival this year was Robert Gecring, acting head of the department depart-ment of art, College of Southern Sou-thern Utah. He chose 37 paintings by 23 artists from Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho, Arizona, and Montana as well as Utah. On his role as juror of the show, Mr. Gecring said, "The visual arts of today are composed com-posed from a complex social intercourse, international in scope. An artist must choose which set of problems he will attempt to solve, each has its own rewards and pitfalls, pit-falls, but none is either superior su-perior or inferior, they are simply different in approach." With this thought in mind I attempted to select the best of each type of art submitted fur the Vernal show," |
