(T-I Staff Photo)- Flood Control Dam Completed, Other Work Sfufed June Storm Brings 1.5 Inches of Rain to Area June is not always a. month of heat and dryness in the Moab area. ... Monday and Tuesday's storm brought the precipitation precipi-tation figure to a point higher than any other month in the year- whereas June is normally the dryest month. 1.5 inches of rain fell in the Moab area during the two days of intensive rains. Black clouds crashed into nearby rock pinnacles and mesas and dumped their loads into the valleys Flowers and gardens were reported ruined in Spamsn Valley by the hail. A flood down Mill Creek took out a detour road at the 5th West bridge building site, but most damage in Moab itself was slight. Castle Valley' recived 1.83 inches of rain during the storms and the Colorado River was running red. Snow JowTereT the LaSal Mountains to the 9,500 foot level The storm center had mostly moved on by Wednesday morning but cold weatner remained dropping the temperature tem-perature to a low of 49 degrees. A dam designed to stop next month's flash floods is nearly completed in Tusher Tush-er Canyon, Mayor Bunce told Times-Independent. The earthfill dam was constructed in the canyon east of the city to prevent floodwaters from carrying sand and debris into the Walker Subdivision. The dam is not expected to get full as it has outlets a-bout a-bout 5 feet from the bottom to allow water to escape gradually. A spillway is also al-so planned in event sudden and long-lasting storms occur oc-cur bringing in more water than is. possible to escape through the outlets. The eleven acre foot capacity ca-pacity dam is about 25 feet high and about a block long. It will be possible to now start- working on another problem in Walker Subdiv- ision the Mayor said. Original Orig-inal engineering of that area ar-ea did not plan for adquate draining from the gutters Water stands and stagnates in front of the residences. Bunce said the city may jtry drilling holes through the cement into the ground in hopes the water will seep away. If this doesn't work it may be possible to get funds to rework the street. The new Tusher Dam received re-ceived a minor lest Monday night and Tuesday when storms broke over the city. Mayor Winford Bunce said the storm actually did not drop water on the cliffs east of the city to fill the reservoir to the overflow tube. There was some impounding im-pounding of water and the dam prevented a minor silt-builttnp silt-builttnp on the Walker Street as would have hapened without with-out the dam. Some silt and sand, however, was deposited deposit-ed in the gutters but it came in from below the dam. The overflow pipeline is in the process of being laid the Mayor said. |
