Show National Park Ser vice is Taking A Mew Look at R oad Possibilities The controversial road proposals pro-posals in the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park were re-examined this week by national and regional reg-ional Park Service officials. The purpose of the trip was to reconsider all road alternatives that have been proposed for access into the region beyond Elephant Hill. The meeting of the officials in the southern part of Canyonlands Can-yonlands is the result of an appeal made by Utah's Governor, Gov-ernor, Calvin L. Rampton, ' to National Park Service Director Di-rector George B, Hartzog. Governor Rampton had made the trip into the primitive Needles section of the park about three weeks ago for a personal look at the problems involved in road building.: Inspecting the situation again in depth this week were Glenn Hendrix, Chief of the Design Office of San Fran- Cisco'; Bob Barrel, Chief of Interpretation of the Southwestern South-western Region Office in Sania Fe; William Everhart, Assistant Director of Interpretation Inter-pretation of the Washington, office; and Dr. Robert Lynn, Chief Scientist of the National Nat-ional Park Service. Accompanying the. group were Superintendent Bates Wilson and District Ranger Dave Minor. The six spent 'the past four days looking at the previously proposed roaa ovei Elephant Hill and the two- proposed tunnel routes. They also examined the proposed pro-posed southern entrance. Assistant J. F. Carithcrs of the Moab office stated Monday that the group is really studying every possibility. possi-bility. He also said it is hoped hop-ed that some kind of recommendation rec-ommendation can be made to solve the road problem as a result of this week's study. |
