Show Medical alert week slated by Jaycees This April 9th will mark the start of Medic Alert Week throughout the country. Our goal is one of public education and creating awareness of the service available to all citizens. The Moab Jaycees represent rep-resent the Medic Alert Foundation International which is a non-profit, charitable and tax-exempt foundation devoted to 24 hour emergency medical identification. Formed in 1956, Medic Alert does not receive any state or federal funding. Last year alone, more than 2,000 members directly credited Medic Alert with helping to save their lives. There are more than 200 common reasons persons per-sons join Medic Alert. The most prevalent reasons in descending order are: allergies al-lergies to penicillin, diabetes, dia-betes, heart condition, taking anticoagulants, wearing contact lenses, allergy to sulfa, epilepsy, allergy to insect stings, allergy to bee stings, and allergy to codeine. Recent estimates by the American Medical Assoc. indicate that 1 out of 5 or roughly 40 million Americans Ameri-cans have a hidden medical medi-cal condition. Medic Alert provides a complete 24-hour emergency emer-gency information capability. capabi-lity. The hidden medical condition of the member is engraved on the back of the bracelet along with an identification number and emergency telephone number. The system is computerized and can provide pro-vide a complete emergency emer-gency record in which all pertinent data can be stored in addition to other information which may be of use in a medical emergency. emer-gency.
