Show reach proper solution Animals on the highways have again chalked up an appalling accident toll in Utah. The State Highway Patrol offices in Moab recorded 39 such accidents in District L alone, 21 of which occurred within a 30-mile range of Moab. The 39 accidents accounted for an economic loss of $30,900, plus ten injuries. Luckily no fatalities occurred from the accidents. This casualty toll can be expected to grow each year as Canyonlands, National Park and other attractions attrac-tions bring in more and more visitors. Out of state drivers are caught off guard because open range is becoming more and more uncommon across the land. Presently, liability in such mishaps is placed on the driver. Contrary to what some might believe, we do not propose shifting that responsibility to the owners own-ers of livestock. We do, however advocate that all parties par-ties concerned, including the federal and state agencies agen-cies 'involved, get their heads together to begin a con certed effort at curing the problem. Ultimately, fencing fenc-ing throughout the state will have to be the solution. The sooner we get started, the better. |
