Show County Given More Time To Clecfr Book Cliffs Problems By C. Sharp Grand county has 60 days in which to clear right of way and work out access problems if the Utah National Nation-al Guard is to open a new road from the Uintah Basin southward this summer. This was agreed upon at a meeting Friday afternoon in the office of Gov. Calvin L. Rampton. The proposed link would fill the last gap in a projected pro-jected north-south Canyon-lands Canyon-lands Highway to extend from Yellowstone National Park to Grand Canyon National Nat-ional Park. It would extend from the town of Thompson to Ouray. The construction was scheduled sche-duled as a summer training operation of Utah National Guard engineers but hit .1 snag when the owner of grazing gra-zing leases on State land in East Willow Creek Canyon refused entry across some of his private land elsewhere, unless the road were routed out of East Willow. He has agreed to grant rights of way across private land if the road is kept out of East Willow and follows a ridge south of it. Major Alan R. Stewart, executive ex-ecutive officer of the 115th Engineers Group, UNG, said guardsmen would have to be able to go through the canyon can-yon during construction to build the ridge road. Charles R. Hansen, director direc-tor of the State Land Division, Divis-ion, said he believed the road should be surfaced to avoid erosion to serve important recreational areas which in the future would be opened up. Sen. Samuel J. Taylor, R-Moab. R-Moab. , said asphaltic material mater-ial is available at PR Spring to provide a dust free and inexpensive in-expensive surfacing. Gov. Rampton said that if the county commission could agree upon the alignment, and clear up right of way problems within 6T days thi guardsmen wou!d build as much of the road as time will permit this summer. r Others attending the mcct-I mcct-I ing were Rep. Edward E. Drake. R-Moab: Grand coun-L coun-L ty Commissioners Ralph J. t Miller, Mars Pope and Fred hBeyeler. a'l of Moab, and .Lee E. Young, land specialist. special-ist. State Land Board. |
