Show ' Commission Contest Gets 2nd Candidate This Week With less than ten days left for filing for political office, - the pace of political activity quickened this week with the filing of a second candidate for two-year County Commissioner. Commis-sioner. Dennis E. (Pete) Byrd, Moab ranch operator and insurance in-surance agent, filed on the Republican ticket for the two-year two-year Commission slot to op- I pose incumbent Mars Pope in the Primary Election in Sep-i Sep-i tember. The only other candidate ' for purely local offices is Commission Com-mission Chairman Ralph J. Miller, Republican, who has filed for reelection to the four year County Commission post. This week, Rep. Edward E. ' Drake, a member of the Utah House of Representatives for L : Dennis E. (Pete) Byrd) the past two years, filed for reelection with the Secretary of State. His district encompasses encom-passes ' Grand and Emery counties. j. In the four-county State district, Rep. Ralph Preece of Vernal is the only announced candidate for the position now held by Sen. Sam Taylor of Moab, who is not seeking reelection. re-election. Rep. Preece was a Moab visitor two days last week. The newest candidate for County Commission, Mr. Byrd. has been a resident of Moab for fifteen years. He came here during the early 1950'3, and became the operator of a private flying service and manager of the Grand county airport. Later, he was activo in the mining business, in real estate and insurance activities, activit-ies, and served as Moab Justice Jus-tice of the Peace until the two JP Districts in the county were consolidated. County Clerk Barbara Dom-enick Dom-enick reminded prospective candidates, that May 10 is the deadline for filing for the county offices. All multi-county candidates must file with the Secretary of State, while local candidates file with the County Clerk. ' Indications are that a number num-ber of candidates from both Republican and Democratic parties are now eying the local lo-cal Commission and legislative legisla-tive posts, and will file toward to-ward the latter part of the filing period prior to May 10. Candidates for posts up for election on the Grand county School Board, are not required requir-ed to file until October, sinco that is a non-partisan election not requiring a Primary. |
