Show Sports Here and There by Al Ablctt Utah has come a long ways in baseball in the past few years. But I would say that this year was the best I have seen. Almost every high school team had one or two good looking boys. The three Utah college teams were way ahead of the teams from the other side. Some very good looking ball players on these teams. Utah, of course, won the conference con-ference title and then the regional re-gional championship and are at present playing in the national tournament in Omaha. On Wednesday Wed-nesday the Utes beat Tennesee 7 to 1 in their first game as Max Pessetto pitched a four-hitter. The Utes have a good college team and I am sure they are going go-ing to wake up the public to the fact that the intermountain coun try is producing some real ball players. Several local boys are on that team Ray and Schick in the outfield, Mickey Culleton, catcher, and Vic Stuckenschnei-der Stuckenschnei-der pitching. So here's hoping they go all the way. The local Industrial league team won two in a row, beating Helper and Magna. But lost to American Fork Wednesday nite. They still need pitching. The local American Legion team are practicing now, getting ready for the league season. They have a number of veterans back. If they can find a pitcher to go with Cowdell, they will go a long way. Red Rolph, Detroit's western scout, was a visitor Thursday. He tells me Utah is one of the leading states in the union in expanding baseball. -A big increase in-crease in schools and amateur ball. Now for the gripe department the Industrial league every year plan to have a youth movement, move-ment, but year after year we see the same faces. Now with all of these good looking kids in the state it looks like this would have been a good year to start. But the kids I talk to, tell me they can't get a shot with any of the clubs in the Industrial so they are going into the amateurs, and some very good looking boys never develop as they should. I hope that the second half finds a good many of these kids getting get-ting their chance. See you next week. AL |
