| Show FACTS AND FIGURES ABOUT THE GREAT MOFFAT the engineers bulletin issued january 1 gives the following round figures of the moffat tunnel the great bore being driven under james peak of the continental divide in colorado excavation cubic yards or about pounds of rock equaling 1600 freight trains of 40 cars each dynamite pounds drill holes mules drill steel pounds electric power K W H timber F B M equivalent to over 2000 miles of plank length 6 1 miles elevation of apex feet 2760 feet below the crest of the continental tin divide cost 12 12 1 2 million dollars moffat tunnel improvement district square miles above is presented a graphic illustration of the moffat tunnel on january 1 as prepared by C A betts office engineer of the tunnel commission rapid progress has been made since that time and the heading of the water tunnel are now approximately only feet apart when they meet in february it will be an important event it will not be the completion of the job but will be notice to the world that the work is approaching completion it will greatly relieve congestion of traffic facilitate drainage and air circulation and speed up the work of en the main bore they now believe that the water tunnel will be holed through in less than 30 days and that the completed tunnel will be turned over to the denver salt lake railroad july 1 1927 when trains will commence running through the great bore that pierces the backbone of the continent C C double who has charge of the utah oil development company well two miles east of moab expects to resume drilling operations shortly officials of the company will aeve from colorado this week when arrangements will be made to start up work dr I 1 W alien was called to bland ing monday on professional work |
