| Show FIELD AT WOODSIDE president last week asked congress for a appropriation to construct additional helium plants A letter from director lord of the budget bureau which accompanied the presidents request said the helium supply being produced at the existing plant at fort worth texas has decreased more than 60 per cent during the last year and the present production is less than hall the quantity required to meet army and navy needs this contingency has arisen since the transmission of the budget for the fiscal year of 1928 although no recommendation was made by the president as to the proposed location of the new helium plants it is believed that the woodside field twenty miles west of green river will be the scene of con sid erable development about a year ago a considerable acreage of land near woodside was set aside by executive order of president coolidge for a helium reserve A large flow of helium gas was developed in a well on the woodside structure drilled several years ago by the utah oil refining company to a depth of feet analyses show that this gas contains a aluch higher percentage of helium than that of texas wells from which the national supply has hitherto been mainly derived exhaustion ha of helium resources in tex as would probably mean development of utah helium since the wood aide supply Is considered one of the most important sources in the united states last summer under the direction of field superintendent ed stewart of the utah oil refining in cooper co oper aaion with bureau of mines engineers the woodside well was shut in and put in condition for future use without any chance of the helium raa escaping the government reimbursed imbur sed the utah oil refining company for the cost of drilling the well |
