For the past eighteen months the fish and game department has been preparing plans for habitat restoration and develop-ment of twelve areas purchased for upland game bird sanctuar- - ies. Two Federal Aid project papers were recently completed covering the work to be done during the coming year. The first phase of the program is habitat restoration by planting trees and shrubs that will pro-vide much needed food and cover for upland bird populations. On April 20, 8,000 Russian olive trees, 500 Ponderosa Pine, 500 Eastern Red Cedar, and 30 lbs. of gray striped Sunflower seed were delivered to the twelve areas. In addition, 400 Multiflora rose plants were purchased by the state to be planted on the sanctuaries. Earl Smoot, prominent Provo sportsman, appeared before the commission Saturday, and ex-plained that he had been sent to the Strawberry Water Users as-sociation by the Utah Wildlife Federation to see if a suitable agreement could be worked out in behalf of the sportsmen, and that the users told him they would be agreeable to letting the sportsmen fish the lake if the state maintained "an ordinary county road" and returned to the lake all of the fish that were produced from the Strawberry egg-tak- e each spring.
