Show SALT LAKE CITY'S ERROR. ' Under the above heading the Reno (Nev.) Journal Jour-nal of the 13th has the following: 1 Salt Lake City should take warning from San Fran cisco and cease its growing tendency to throw mud at itself. it-self. AVe offer this advice because we have a friendly feeling feel-ing for our neighbor to the east and would dislike to see the intermountain city discredited by the people of the rest of the United States. Take the case of its Chief of Police. He has been held t to answer to the criminal court on a charge of conspiracy to defraud tourists, the accusation having been made dv a ' self-confessed bunko-steerer, who said the Chief had been holding him tip for silence monev from time to time. The newspapers of the city have taken sides, and it is freely charged that the officer is to be removed really for political reasons, and that Parrent, the accuser, is merely the instru- ment of the Chief 'a political enemies. We do not know the Chief or his accuser, and as for Salt . Lake polities; their, complications were such that we gave up trying to understand how the wires were puiiea ages ago, but it seems at this distance that unseemly raking up of muck in the City of Saints can do no one any good. The Police Chief is on trial. He will be proved guilty or inno-. inno-. , cent. Then why not wait until the court shall have one officer's offi-cer's alleged crime an excuse for the language of the terma- gant or the fishwife! I , San Francisco, 'with her everlasting scandal in municipal affairs, exploited to the fullest extent by her own newspa- Icrs, has come 'to be a synonym for corruption in public life. Vet, if one would stop to think, it is impossible to believe that half the crimes attributed by her newspapers to the pub-s-hc, officials have ever been committed, and we all know that the proportion of honest men in San Francisco is as great ' as anywhere else. Iter own newspapers, with their delirious howls of "Fraud! fraud!" at everything and everybody, have given San Francisco a reputation that is unfit to print. Let Salt Lake City have a care lest the same fate overtake her.. |
