Show NOT COLLECTING TO BUY A MEDAL FOR HARRY THAW - ( COLUMBUS, Ind., March 15. A few days ago a story was published here that Frank P. Smith of this city, the official of the Indianapolis, Columbus k Southern Traction company who recently re-cently refused to work longer unless his salary was reduced, had been accosted ac-costed by a traveling man who was taking penny collections to raise a fund to purchase a medal for Harry K. Thaw, the slayer of Stanford White. The story went the rounds and was to the effect that the traveling man was only one of several in Indiana who were asking people for pennies to help swell the fund. When the story got as far as New York City it became twisted. The New . York end of the line said that Smith was taking the collection, col-lection, and suggested that the pennies be sent to him. He has been receiving ; pennies from Eastern people since that lime and it is needless to say that he I does not know what to do with them. He is not raising any Thaw medal fund, and he does not wish the money. It takes two cents to send every one of these pennies back, so he is losing money on the deal. |
