Show WEEK'S RBfOQTfROH ELY ! SHOWS WOSK 'iS ElUSHEi) . IN HLL Of THE MINES . ELY, Nev., Feb. 22. The week's development de-velopment work n the Ely district is told In the following report: NEVADA COPPER CON. Work Is progressing rapidly on the tunnel tun-nel which is to connect the workings of the Ruth and the Star Pointer mines. The portion of the tunnel started from the Ruth Is now in 1460 feet, and that from the Star Pointer Is in 100 feet, which leaves only about 700 feet to complete In effecting the connection. '. The churn drills are working with great success, giving the company a clearer Idea of the extent of the ore body beyond the limits of the present workings. It was unofficially stated yesterday that the data obtained from the operation of the churn drills makes It absolutely certain that the continued con-tinued work of the miners In the various workings will block out many times more than the 25,000,000 tons of ore now In sight. One of the Ruth drills passed through camp today. It has been temporarily tempo-rarily lent to the Nevada Northern railroad rail-road and will be taken to Cherry Creek, where It will be used In sinking a well for the railroad water tank at that place. Grading Is well under way for the foundation founda-tion of the first unit of the $10,000,000 smelter which the Nevada Consolidated and the Cumberland-Ely are building at McGill. CUMBERLAND-ELY COPPER CO. Development of the Cumberland-Ely properties has been pressed with new energy en-ergy since the arrival of the new general manager of the Nevada Con., and the Cumberland-Ely. Joseph P. Gazzam, whose successful operations in this country coun-try and South Africa have given him international in-ternational fame as a mining engineer. The revelations of the wonderful wealth of the Veteran workings on the com- fiany's properties continue to hold chief merest. ence shaft, prospecting the ore struck there. Other mines being developed. F. S. and Joseph Pheby, who have Just returned re-turned from Salt Lake, stated that they were not prepared to discuss the report of negotiations with Samuel Newhouse for control of the company. ELY WESTERN COPPER CO. Same as last report. BOSTON ELY DEV. COPPER CO. Twenty men are now at work upon the company's properties. The churn drill recently re-cently installed has already penetrated 124 feet down Into the iron capping. Active development plans, arranged some time ago, are being carried out. ROBINSON MINING CO. James T. 'Mlngey, formerly with the Cumberland-Ely, has been appointed superintendent su-perintendent of the company's mines. He will enter upon the direction of the work on Monday, when operations, which were checked by the recent bad weather, will be resumed. A meeting of the directors of the company has been called to determine deter-mine whether the continued work on the shaft shall be done by contract or by 'miners 'mi-ners employed by the day, under the direction di-rection of Superintendent Mlngey. ELY ROCHELLE. Work temporarily suspended. RICKARD ELY COPPER COMPANY. Stock has been listed on the San Francisco Fran-cisco and Reno exchanges and is now selling at 45 cents. G. L. Rlckard, who has returned to Ely, says that he is now looking for an engineer of proved ability and experience In developing copper properties prop-erties to take the position of general manager of the development operations on all of his companies. The scope of the work has now grown so large that he wishes to place lt-ln the hands of a man of thoroughly tested ability. Churn drills have been ordered for all the Rlckard companies, excepting the United Ely, where a churn drill has been in operation for some time. GIROUX CON. COPPER MINES CO. Work Is now well under way on the double compartment shaft between the Brooks and the Morris shnfts. This shaft will be used in handling ores from the Bunker Hill, Giroux, Brooks and Morris shafts and workings. These four shafts are in a row and are already connected with tunnels, extending from one to the other. The new double compartment shaft jwIU be sunk to the depth of the others, and will reach the connecting tunnel. tun-nel. The richest ore is being taken from the Giroux shaft. Some of this contains native copper and assays as high as 80 per cent. The average, based upon the value of the ore taken from the other shafts, is about 3 per cent, although some of the workings produce as high as 6 per cent ore on an average. There are about 20,000 feet of workings in the mines of the Giroux company. The Chilian grinding grind-ing mill Is about completed, s.nd the work on the concentrator building Is being be-ing rushed at a tremendous rate. Some of the machinery for the concentrator Is on the ground. Other heavy pleres of machinery, which were started to the mines, had to be left upon the road until conditions for hauling Improve. ELY WITCH COPPER CO. Considerable progress made on the raise above the tunnel. Building operations opera-tions about completed. M 'DONALD ELY COPPER CO. Active operations continue in the Golden Gold-en Gate and Mill shafts and in the Wall tunnel. Grading has been completed for the boarding-house. D. C. McDonald, the general manager. Is In Salt Lake conferring confer-ring with the officers of the oompnny, working in ore. A mine sure. ELY CONSOLIDATED COPPER CO. In the Brilliant shaft sulphides were encountered at the depth of 345 feet. The shaft is now down In the sulphides thirty feet, making the total depth of the shaft 875 feet. The copper ore improves with ndded depth. In sinking the shaft the miners passed through different bodies of ore, but as they were above the wster level they, did not carry the weight of the ore now being mined. The striking of ore at that depth, and through layers of lime, has much increased the value of claims lying south and eat of the shaft, and considerable development work will be done In that direction. The Anic.icjin shaft was sunk ten ff'et during the week, making the total depth 420 feet. The Zack shaft has been retlmbered to the bottom, or 300 feet. The foundation for the big Zack hoist has been completed, com-pleted, and the hoist will be put in place this week. The Ely Con. management does not look upon the strike in the Brilliant Bril-liant shaft as a great surprise, as the Indications In-dications during the progress of the work on the shaft made it clear that sulphides would be striifk at the proper depth. BUTTE AND ELY COPPEK CO. j Force of miners steadily at work on the ore body opened up. During: the week the water right purchased from i Bishop OIn H. Snow In Water canyon, near Lund, was transferred to the com-pany. com-pany. It Is understood that the company hss secured the water right with a view toward putting up a smelter on the completion com-pletion of the projected railroad from the south, which will pass close to Lund and Preston. ELY MINES CO. Drifting: from the tunnel has commenced com-menced and Is well under way. Three shifts of miners are kept steadily, at work. FEDERAL ELY COPPEE CO. Three shifts of miners are kept steadily at work in the Groop tunnel. Crosscut-ting Crosscut-ting from the Queen of the West shaft Is progressing rapidly. Machinery for the new shaft has arrived upon the ground, but work Is being deferred until the arrival ar-rival of General Manager W. J. Craig from Salt Lake next week, so that he can point the shaft. Development operations outlined by the management are being parried out satlsftorily by the men In the field. ELY COPPES MINING CO. The frame "and hoist, recently Installed at the shaft on the Skylark fraction No. 1 are now In use, and the work on the shaft is progressing rapidly. Preparations Prepara-tions are being made to carry out other plans for development. ELY CENTEAL COPPEE CO. Work has been eagerly pressed In tha Rex shaft, where the recent strike was made. The miners have made considerable consider-able headway, and the ore body shows no sign of diminishing. The Rex shaft Is near the center of the company's properties, proper-ties, and the showing there Is Indicative of a great body of ore. It is believed to be a continuation of the ore body revealed in the workings of the Copper Flatprop-ertles Flatprop-ertles of the Nevada Consolidated Copper Cop-per company. ELY NORTHERN COPPEE CO.
