Show OFFICER GOES MAD;, PRISONER GIVES UP LOS ANGELES.. April lS.Alvln Slew-lerskl, Slew-lerskl, formerly State division secretary of the Brewers union, who, the authorities authori-ties thought, bsd escaped while Detective Sergeant Charles Taylor was temporarily demented Friday night, surrendered himself him-self to Sheriff Hammel last night. According Ac-cording to Slewlerskl's statement Taylor Tay-lor had been deranged for several days, and Friday night acted as" if he were a ! raving maniac. Advices have been sent j to can rancisco regaraing tne surrender of Siewlerskl, and also regarding the condition con-dition of Taylor. Late Friday night Detective Taylor went to the central station and claimed that he had a prisoner at the city jail. While talking with Detective Mofflt, Taylor threw up his hands and claimed that be was pursued by ghosts. Then he seemed to have a lapse of memory, and could tell nothing of the prisoner, which-hls which-hls papers showed that he must have had. After two hours conversation with police po-lice officials Taylor was unable to ex- flain where his prisoner was, and be was aken to the receiving hospital. Police Surgeon Garrett made an examination of the man and said that bis condition was probably brought on . by lack of sleep and a continued nervous strain. According to Siewlerskl, Taylor imagined imag-ined that a woman waa pursuing him, and that two colored porters were his enemies. Because of that Taylor refused to go north Friday night, and took his prisoner to a private hotel. Early in the morning, Siewlerskl claims, Taylor got up and forced him to dress and go out on the street. For more than a half hour the two ran up and down the ! streets, and Anally Taylor escaped from Siewlerskl. At the county jail last night Siewlerskl claimed that he bad nothing to fear, as he was Innocent of any crime, and wished to meet his accusers. The arrested man says that he handled a great deal of money while he was' secretary of the union, but did not -abscond with any of The prisoner claims that he wen to Blsbee, Arts., some time ago for the benefit of his health. Siewlerskl has a wife and five children living at Blsbee. Late last night Taylor was taken to the California hospital, where It is said his condition is greatly improved. |
