Show Sports Here and There by Al Ablett It looks very much like out high school team is out of the race, having lost their second game to Cyprus, a crew that hasn't dropped a contest. Cyprus has one of the sweetest high school teams in the state A or B. My guess is they will win the championship going away. But here is a warning if they slip in this division they will find the Miners ready to take over. The Pioneer league got off to a flying start with every city having big opening day crowds. Salt Lake had over 7000 paid. The Boise Pilots won the opener 5 to 3 when a Salt Lake boy, Bob Story doubled in the winning runs. Bob caught for Brigham City in the Industrial league last year. The Bees evened the series ser-ies Wednesday winning 7 to 4 before about 2500 fans. The two new members of the mile high circuit have found that the brand oi ball is plenty fast. Billings head man Archie Cochran, a brother bro-ther of the great Mickey has all ready sent out for more experienced experi-enced players. Ogden and Boise both have good ball clubs. The Bees have a small team but fast and if they get pitching they will be in the race all the way. Dick Lamer, the boy that pitched the University Univer-sity of California to the championship champ-ionship last year, looks like the Bees best bet. My guess is he and Dick Drilling will be the one two punch. The local baseball picture took on a more rosy look, as the BD-AA'ers BD-AA'ers took it upon themselves to put an amateur team in the field. Bingham has long been noted as one of the best baseball towns in the state and they have been missed in the last few years by not having a team in one of the leagues. This year's team will fill a big gap not only for the fans but for the boys who have completed their school and American Legion play. I understand under-stand that Frank Zaccaria will be in charge of the team, a swell choice as Frank has had a world of experience. The business men are beinj; asked to help put this team in the field, and they are responding in fine shape. But every fan in the district should get behind this project and I am sure that if they are approached right they will. Bowling is winding up its greatest season. Bingham has Had her share of success. Judy Slotte brought ending fame to our town among the women, by winning thp state all events, and she is resting in fourth place in the national tournament in the same event. Jimmie Abplanalp finished finish-ed second in the state singles, and about six Bingham bowlers finished in the money in the Round Robin. The Merchants won the championship in the fast South Side Classic league. This team was Jim and George Abplanalp, Ab-planalp, George Sluga, Bill Ablett, Ab-lett, Joe Brisk and Captain Paul Slotte. Yes, Bingham has had a' great year. See you next week. AL |
