Show PIONEER UTAH ' ENGINEER DIES John Campbell Wheelon, 87, of 674 Ninth avenue, pioneer Irrigation Irriga-tion and agricultural engineer of Utah and Idaho, died la a Salt Lake hospital Monday evening of Infirmities In-firmities Incident to age. Mr. Wheelon, who was awarded the degree of master of scientific agricultural engineering by the Utah State Agricultural college In 1915, was born In Middlesex county, Ontario, Canada, on December 10, 1852. He was a son of Thomas C and Eliza Ann Campbell Wheelon. Whee-lon. The family moved to St Cloud, Minn, where Mr. Wheelon spent the early years of his life, later taking up a homestead In western Minnesota. He married Addle Rush ton Latham there. Eaten Buslases In 1879 the family moved to Denver, Den-ver, where Mr, Wheelon engaged In the building and contracting business until 1897, when he went to Ogden and secured employment with tha Bear River Irrigation company, beginning as an Irrigation Irriga-tion engineer.. . In 1910 he was given charge of reclaiming waterlogged land lit the 1 valley comprising more than 6000 acres. In January, 1918, offered the position po-sition of manager of the Twin Falls Canal company, he moved to Twin Falls, Idaho, where he resided until 1924. The project, under his direction, direc-tion, thrived and attracted notice of such Irrigation and reclamation authorities as Elwood G. Meade, who with his staff Inspected the canal system. Asiatic and European Euro-pean governments sent their engineers en-gineers to study the canal system. Active la Chares Mr. Wheelon was an active member mem-ber of the L. D. S. church. Following Fol-lowing his retirement, he did genealogical gen-ealogical work. His first wife died before the family came to Utah and In 1900 he married Agnes Wardrop Row-ler Row-ler at Corinne. A son of the first marriage, Eugene, came west with his father and also engaged In Irrigation Irri-gation work. Surviving are another son, Hiram S. Fowler, Toppeniah, Wash.; three daughters, Mrs. Anne W. Hulbert Bayslde, N. Y, and Mrs. Sarah Fowler Squires and Mrs. Ruth W. Oh lion. Salt Lake City; 14 grandchildren grand-children and 11 great-grandchildren. Funeral services -will be held Thursday at noon at 260 East South Temple- street. Brief additional services will be held In the Brig-hem Brig-hem City L. D. S. Second ward chapel at 3 p. m. Interment will be In the Brigham City cemetery. |
