Show Stars Laud Aid Given By Secretaries HOLLYWOOD, March 2J "She's wonderful. You meet a woman like her only twice, or maybe three " i- your. life" The . speaker is Leslie Howard. The lady under discussion Is his office "wife," Violet Vio-let Connington In other words, his secretary. Miss Connington la small, pretty, aged 21 or 28, with a demure manner, man-ner, highly intelligent, extremely ca-psbls. ca-psbls. Her Job is to take care of all of Mr. Howard'a buelness activities. ac-tivities. "She ia more of an associate asso-ciate than a aecretary." the actor tells me enthusiastically, explaining explain-ing that he met her a year ago, in London, through Producer Gabriel Pascal, and that shs helped him work out his British picture producing pro-ducing company and that he would sooner lose his right arm than lose this lady'a business cooperation. The confidence inspired by Miss Connington ia by no means a rarity among secretaries of the stars. And it Is not often that this trust proves a mistake. Two lone examples that come to my mind are the secretaries secreta-ries nf Simons Simon and Clara Bow, both of whom terminated their Jobs In the law courts. But. by and large, the secretarial record In Hollywood is good. Belts Davis' secretary, Bridget Price, la an old friend of Bette's mother, who was responsible for getting her the Job. She Is married mar-ried but has no children, is a great movie fan and attends all of Bette's previews, which Bette is too nervous ner-vous to attsnd herself. She has no set hours of work and keeps a telephone by her bedside, which sha calla her aecond office. W. C Ftelda refera to his secrs-tary secrs-tary as "Mickey Mouse." Her real name la Mickey Michaels and she practically runa the comedian's life. She is always on ths set when Fields Is working and acta as his private aerlpt girl. She has been with Bill a little over a year receives re-ceives around $ a week in salary. |
