Show CITY'S TRAFFIC BOARD EXTENDS SCOPE OF WORK Five Subcommittees to Handle Phases of Safety Program Work was under way Wednesday to extend activities of the city traffic traf-fic commission by creation of flvs new subcommittees, each to handle a specifio phase ef traffic safety work. Meeting Tuesday afternoon In tha office of Mayor John M. Wallace, the commission decided to create the five groups, headed by the following fol-lowing commission members: Engineering, ECJ. Wheatlake; enforcement, Charles N. Fehr; school and child safety, Mrs. Arch J. West; community education, to be beaded by a new commission member to be named from the junior jun-ior chamber of commerce, and state cooperation, Julian M. Bamberger. Invitee Junior C ef C The commission decided te open lt membership to Junior chamber representation and it was understood under-stood Clyde L Van Wagonen, head of the junior chamber public safety committee, would be chosen If he Is able to accept tha post Each committee will be limited to five members and will be representative represen-tative of all groups with traffic safety projects. Nominations Asked George French, appointed Tuesday Tues-day as commission secretary, was instructed to contact the groups and ask them for nominations to the committees. Mr. French has served as commission commis-sion statistician. Hs replaces as secretary sec-retary Sergeant E. J. Steinfeldt, who was returned to the police department. depart-ment. The new appointment added 140 a month travel allowance to Mr. French's 1100 monthly salary. The commission withheld action on a plan ta begin using parking meters aa rapidly as they are Installed. In-stalled. It denied a request by Postmsster L A. Smoot not to place meters around the post office. It was decided meters would be placed at 45-degree angles on sidewalks side-walks where angular parking la enforced. en-forced. The eommlaaion accepted a tentative tenta-tive offer of the J0-S0 club, group of young business men, to give the city a "drunkometer" to determine the amount ef alcohol in suspected drunken drivers. The commission voted te recommend recom-mend that the city commission adopt an ordinance allowing bicycles bi-cycles and roller skstes to be ridden on sidewalks outside the business district, on grounds sidewalks are safer than streets. j |
