Show Garbo, Boyer WinNewFame AtParamount - The romantic story of Napoleon Bonaparte and beautiful Countess Walewska, with Charles Boyer and Greta Garbo in starring roles, is retold in brilliant style in "Con-quest." "Con-quest." which opened Thursday at the Paramount theater. Over two million dollars was spent on the Uvish spsctacls, but it was well worth it. The picture is a prestiKe-builder for M-CI-M. Garbo is the Polish girl who gives her love unselfishly to the, conquering Koyer as ne occupies Poland and presses on into Russia. As history has it. Walewska was the only woman associated with the emperor who was not motivated by ambition. . I Startled when the emperor steps I down from his high place to woo her, the hero-worshiping young Pol-j Ish countess responded with a self-1 Jess love that, for a time, tamed the Irresistible will to conquer that made Napoleon push on to ultimate defeat and banishment. Gar bo's characterization of Madame Ma-dame Walewska will stand out as ana of har rcatc3Ubul3hQii equaled by Boyer and his interpretation interpre-tation of Napoleon. The dynamic little general who ruled Europe and had the rest of the world trembling takes on new human-ness human-ness at Boyer's hands. Spectacle follows spectacle as the history of Napoleon's rise and fall, comeback and final banishment is unfolded. Probably outstanding Is the bitter defeat at Moscow and slow, tragic retreat It is an unforgettable un-forgettable scene. But credit does not go entirely to Boyer and Garbo. A powerful supporting cast provides splendid interpretations of historical figures in the -Napoleonic era. Reginald Owen appears as the scheming Tallyrand, Jean Fenwick as Maria Ma-ria Louisa, Dame May Whitty as Bonaparte's mother and Henry Stephenson as the grave, gentlemanly gentle-manly and patriotic Count Walewska. Walew-ska. Lief Erickson, C.
