Show Father of Two Children Held In Utah Dance Hall Murder (Special to The Telegram) MAMMOTH, Juab County, Nov. 22 Victor Steedman, father of two children and from a prominent Juab county family, was In jail here Monday, Mon-day, booked on a murder charge as the result of a shooting following a danca hall brawl. The body of George Wilson, 28. rodman on a Union Pacific railroad crew laying a new spur at Mammoth Mam-moth and Steedman's asserted victim, vic-tim, waa to ba taken to Omaha by C. W. McKee. in charge of the construction crew. The shooting occurred at a Mammoth Mam-moth beer parlor early Sunday morning, the aftermath of a fight at a dance hall Saturday night, according ac-cording to investigating officers. Wilson died in a Payson hospital Sunday at 9 a. m. Quarrel Reported The altercation started, officers were told, when Steedman grabbed Mrs. June Reed, a young widow, who was Wilson's companion at the dance, and started dancing. Steedman challenged him to "come outside and settle it" In the ensuing en-suing fight, witnessed by Mrs Steedman. Mra. Reed and several friends of the participants, Steedman Steed-man was severely beaten. Taken horns by his friends, according to officers, he obtained a gun and two hours after the fight, accosted Wilson Wil-son In a beer parlor. Tell of Shooting - "Are you the one who hit me at the dance," witnesses quoted him as asking Wilson. "Yes. but let's call it off. Let's have a beer," Wilson responded. Mra Reed said Steedman then drew a gun and with no further warning than "I'm going to kill you," fired twice with his .32-caliber gun. One shot missed, but the other crashed through Wilson's mouth Into his head. He died without regaining re-gaining consciousness. Steedman. a miner who has served an L. D. S. church mission and is active in civic affairs, collapsed at the jail when told of Wilson's death and still was under a physician's physi-cian's care Monday. "I had been drinking.' I don't re-I re-I member anything about it." waa all he said. Mrs. Reed, who, with Peter Christensen. owner of the bar, and his son. Michael, witnessed the shooting, said he had been drinking heavily before ha accosted her in the dance hall. County Attorney C. M. Leather-bury Leather-bury and Sheriff Heber K. Mellor were conferring Monday about charges against Steedman, but the prosecutor said it probably would be first degree murder. |
