Show Some Conduct Is Result of Certain Ages i . By .MYRTLE MEYER ELDRED It la always wist in dealing with any kind of childish behavior to temper one's treatment by allowing I for tba age at which It appears. . Soma conduct ia typical of certain : ag and makea its sure appearance : despite companions, environment or what have you. Calling Names' Thus, the 4-year-old indicates a stage ot development by "calling names." He shows his contempt for his parents by addressing them as "taps" or "dumbells." He ia fascinated fas-cinated by profanity and picks up a goodly collection which be uses at the slightest provocation. All of these habits are evidences that he wants to feel grownup, and if he hears adults use profanity it gives him a glorious sense of oneness with them to indulge in such mouth-filling mouth-filling terms. His contempt for his parents is one indication of his need for more liberty, more legitimate opportunities opportuni-ties to act like grownups, whose complete freedom of conduct he unconsciously un-consciously envies. To call them "saps" pulls them down for a moment mo-ment to the level on which he is and frewa which U iong tolvat himself. Be Calm It may be pointed out to the child calmly, that it ia wise to usa only such words as he understands. Also, that he may call his comrades what he pleases and they will retaliate in kind. But you, as a parent, expect ex-pect to be respected, even if it is only a lip service at the moment. When he uses verbal abuse to strike at his parents, h can be ostracized from the family circle un- til he can talk more becomingly. Parents need show no particular horror when tha child uses profanity pro-fanity any more than if, for the moment, he donned his father's derby hat. It's out of place in his vocabulary, and so he should be told. It isn't amusing and he should not be laughed at. It is just smart alecky behavior and that diea the more quickly when nobody gives it any exciting attention. atten-tion. Our leaflet, "Meals for the School Child," suggests that mothera vary foods and serve them attractively.
