Strangely, Fischer, who has proved himself many times in major ma-jor competition, who won th national na-tional Intercollegiate in 1932 and who staged one of the most dra- matic back to the wall fights known to golf laat year when he finished with three birdies in a row to defeat de-feat Jock McLean of Scotland at tha STth, hole in the finale of th national amateur, is not a favorite. Th man the writers and th players are picking Is one who haa never held th national amateur crown Johnny Goodman et Omaha who surprised th world j in 18SS when he nosed out Ralph Guldahl to win th national open championship. Since then Goodman Good-man haa played phenomenal golt and haa won the transmisslssippt championship three or four times, but haa never been abls to win I th title Bobby Jones held five times, Goodman Is considered one of tha most finished performers of amateur ama-teur golf today. His late appearance appear-ance in competition on the Pacific coast was in 192 at Pebble Beach, when he dethroned Jones in the first round of the national amateur the year Harrison Johnston defeated de-feated Dr. O. F. Willing of Port- land in the finals. And that brings up the fact that Dr. Willing, who played brilliantly brilliant-ly in Walker cup international competition com-petition and who came so close to. being national champion in the California Cali-fornia tournament, will attempt a comeback In the title play which starts Monday at Alderwood. The golfing dentist who built such a reputation as a match player that he was considered on of th most dangerous opponents in th game, haa been out of competition th past five years. Ha elected to come back when the tournament was scheduled over a course which h knew forward and backward. His efforts will be watched with interest. in-terest. 'Johnny Fischer is good, very good and young players who have, met him, and have tasted th brand of match play he la accustomed accus-tomed to give, are dubious of th stand Goodman should be a favorite fa-vorite Young Paul Leslie, who won th western amateur last year, threatens threat-ens to put good old Louisiana Stat university on th map as does his fellow student, Freddi Haas, tha national intercollegiate champion. Then ther is the Texas delegation the transmississippi champion, Don Schumacher of Dallas, Jack Munger of Dallas, who made golf history In 1933 when he went to the quarterfinals of th national, and a half dozen others from th Lone Star state. All eyes are on Portland and on th eve of the championship it, would seem a veteran, who is less than 30 years old, Johnny Good-, man, is the man to beat. |
