Show Downey Drops Leake Feud WASHINGTON, March 2 (UP) Senator Sheridan Downey (D, Cal.) today withdrew hit opposition opposi-tion to the appointment of Paul R. Leake as collector of customs at San Francisco. In a letter to Senator Joeiah W. Bailey D, N. C, chairman of a finance subcommittee considering the appointment, Downey said his decision to drop hit fight against Leake was based on the fact that his opposition "might too easily be misconstrued as an attack upon the liberties of Journalistic comment." com-ment." Leake, publisher of the Woodland, Wood-land, Cal, Democrat, had written editorials criticising Downey. The senator complained they were "defamatory "de-famatory and libelous" and when President Roosevelt nominated Leake, Downey pretested thet the appointment wat "personally obnoxious." |
