QUIRT TO CONTINUE: A statement answering "what is technocracy?" from th viewpoint of the three former leader In the group now is impossible because they are no longer technocrats. Rau-lenstrsuch Rau-lenstrsuch and Jones, however, hsve announced that a research along lines similar to the former research will continue at Columbia. What Is that research attempting to find out? First, It is sttempling Desertion of Ranks by Three Leaders Adds to the Confusion By J. . BRACKETT, United Press Staff Writer NEW YORK, 'Jan. 15 "What is technocracy?" Th answer to that now famous question becomes even more ot an enigma with th revolt which hu developed in technocracy's ranks. Four men hsve been generally recognised rec-ognised u technocracy's thinkers: Howsrd Scott, the director; Welter Rautenstrsuch, head of the deportment deport-ment of industrial engineering at Columbia Co-lumbia univeraity: Frederick Acker-man, Acker-man, architect and economist, and Bassett Jones, electrical engineer and mathematician. With the resignation of Rautenstrsuch, Rauten-strsuch, Ackermsn and Jonu, technocracy tech-nocracy u the apecific description of a group of men thinking along similar sim-ilar lines now is confined purely to Scott and his adherents. The lines along which they ar thinking are: That th prlc aystem (which is any social system thst meuuru value in money) is outmoded and must collapse; col-lapse; that a principal factor which will mak it collapse Is an overwhelming overwhelm-ing and evergrowing burden of debt; and that another, and perhaps a major ma-jor factor, la the advance of the machine ma-chine which must throw men out of work If the machine'a production is sold at a profit that Is, produced to gather voluminous and accurate data u to the growth of industry In the lut 100 years; the effects of the march of the machine (such u, "will it produce chronic and inevitable mw unemployment?") and, finally, the effect of debt . Aa a matter of research, both sides of the argument appear to be pretty much in agreement Each is seeking th facta about th machine, debt unemployment and production. Aa to the implicationa to be drawn from those facta, there is disagree-ment disagree-ment at least, in so far u th public presentation of 'such implications ar concerned. The Rautenatrauch-Jones Rautenatrauch-Jones group announced it would seek the facta, and that any theories drawn from the facta would be presented pre-sented and argued In the most approved ap-proved and scientific manner. CAUSES OF ARGUMENT It Is the Implicationa of technocracy which have aroused most of the argument argu-ment The oft-repeated statements that an American need work only four hour day and four days a week; that he need work only between be-tween th age of 15 and 49; that he could receive the equivalent of $20,000 a year under a mors efficient ef-ficient system; that 11.000.000 to 13,-000.000 13,-000.000 men could do all the nation'a work If th moat efficient available method war used all of these, Scott uya, are in th nature of symbol sym-bol to indicate the possibilities of rejuvenating the nation. I Scott has Mid, in personal conversation, conver-sation, that auch figure cited to swske the nation to it taikur to obtain what it might have. He hu said that these thing are not eully or quickly obtainable. He added that they cannot b obtained under this system. ANSWERS ACCUSATIONS HI foes argued that he used and allowed the use of auch figures to imply that technocracy actuary promises these fulfillments. Scott pointed out that he wu not, responsible respon-sible for the implications which others oth-ers drew from official remarka made by him or other technocrat. Opponent Op-ponent Immediately replied that permitting per-mitting these ideals to be held out u capable ot Immediate accomplishment accomplish-ment wu unscientific and unfair. Aa to the future of technocracy, a person closely associated with the organization believu it will continue. He holds Scott hu mission which Scott himself cannot define, but that he will fulfill that mission even though uncognizant of his basic pur-poae, pur-poae, which, in this friends words, is "to act u a catalyst in developing powerful and effective thinking and action In the reformation of society." This friend ssid technocrecy's statistical statis-tical errors are numerous, but that those errors are of minor importance. |
