Show Foreign Nations Taking American Markets, Borah Tells Senators WASHINGTON, Jan. 2S (UP) Warnings that countries with depreciated depre-ciated currencies are acquiring American Amer-ican foreign and domestic markets were uttered in the aenate today as the currency issue waa raised again despite yesterday's overwhelming rejection re-jection of free silver. Senator Borah (Rep., Idaho) turned the debate to the depreciated currency cur-rency problem after the senate had spent hours of discussion over inflation infla-tion and war debts. The debate held up action on the Glaas bank reform bill and prompted Senator Glass (D., V. ) to threated clotun at one time. Denunciation by Senator Bingham (Rep., Conn.) of inflation project brought Borah to hit feet to exclaim that farmers of the United States owed $30,000,000 to Connecticut insurance in-surance companies and that the dollars dol-lars farmers must pay in discharge of their debts are "dishonest dollars." "It takes three times s much cotton, cot-ton, wheat and hogs in 1933 to pay the debt as wen represented by the debt when contracted in 1921," Borah said. "I am not aeeking to cheapen the dollar. I have no desire to go off the gold standard. But countries with managed curnncles are taking our foreign markets and over a high tariff tar-iff wall they an taking our domestic market day by day." 1 |
