Show VENEZUELAN REBELS ARE REPULSED IN BATTLE -ii CARACAS,' Jan. 21 The revolutionary revolution-ary force under Gen. Riera which attacked at-tacked Coro Monday, was obllgred to retreat, leaving SO men killed and 113 wounded behind, as "well- as many .' prisoners and' a considerable amount of arms and. baggage in the hands of the government forces. " ..." At 1 o'clock Monday morning the revolutionists under Riera unexpectedly unexpect-edly assumed the offensive. The government' govern-ment' supposed Qeneral Riera was at Sabinela, but instead he appeared outside out-side Coro with one thousand men, his I entire command, an'J attacked the town from two different directions at the 1 same time. One rebel column succeeded ' . In pushing nearly to the center of the town. At .the first fire the government rollers were thrown Into confusion, but as soon as they recovered from the surprise sur-prise they atood up against the rebel forces. The government troops were commanded by Generals HennoslUb and Telerela. ' After an engagement which lasted fori ten hours, the fighting going on In the etreets and from the houses of Coro, the revolutionists were obliged to retire. It is known here that two schooners succeeded January 16th in landing arms and ammunition for the use of the revolutionists under General Riera, at a -point on the coast near Coro. The fact that these schooners were overhauled over-hauled by an Italian schooner before they had the munitions of war on board , and that they succeeded in passing the I blockade when-loaded with arms and J ammunition : for the revolutionists, is J Quoted in Caracas as proof of the truth -of the frequent statements to the effect j that the blockading powers are interested inter-ested in aiding the revolution. |
