BERT DE SHAZZO committed suicide In the Sliver Bew county jail at Butte last night. He Is well known to the authorities here. He was arrested In March, 1902, and after a preliminary hearing was eent to the county jail to await trial on eight counts Four of the counts were for passing fictitious checks, two were for forgery, one was for grand larceny and the other for petit larceny. His trial occurred in June, 1902, and on June 21st he was sentenced sen-tenced to serve four months in the county Jail. While In the jail De' Shazzo told the officials of a confession which he alleged was made-to him by Peter Mortensen, who Is in the penitentiary, having been convicted of murdering James R. Hay. When the local police attempted to arrest De Shazzo last March he stood theit at bay with a gun and made his escape. He was afterward recaptured. After his release from the county jail at the expiration of his four months' sentence, he was arrested by the police and held for several days, on suspicion sus-picion of having held -up a saloon in the western part of the city and Injured former Sheriff Tom Lewis in a fierce fight. 'This offense was not fastened to De Shazzo; as he proved an alibi. De Shazzo, who was 24 years old, Is said to have a wife living in the city. He was known as a game and daring man. |
