The City Council met last r.IsV.t In committee meeting- and discussed . at length the proposed increase of salaries cf city cHIcIais. The meeting was opened by Mr. Cot-trell, Cot-trell, who wanted the matter settled, but Mr. Daveler reminded him that the committee's action would only be advisory. ad-visory. Mr. Hewlett, who was absent Monday evening, opposed the increases ug-gested on the ground that the money In the treasury w hich was raised by the sale of city property was for a new Jail, and could not be devoted to other channels. chan-nels. Mr. Robinson favored the Increase of the salaries of all city officials, if any were to be advanced. Mr. Sharp was of the opinion that the salaries should j be equalized and recommended that-the i .Auditor make a report. He moved that j the matter be laid over for a week, but later withdrew the motion In favor of j Mr. Hewlett's motion to refer the mat ter to the Auditor and the Finance committee. com-mittee. Davis agreed to this motion. Mr. Cottrell maintained his position cf Monday night, and said if the matter were referred it might be turned down. In view of the fact that several policemen police-men had asked him to get their wages raised, he was not in favor of Increasing anybody's stipend. A. J. Davis wanted the matter referred, re-ferred, but wanted the City Attorney Included. In-cluded. He could fee no Justice In the partiality that wxjuld be shown by raising rais-ing the salaries of a few of the officials, if all were not Included. Mr. Daveler followed the same line. The milk inspector gets only $75 per month and has to pay railroad fares to the extent of $10 each month. All officials offi-cials are equally entitled to increase, and I do not see the Justice of neglecting neglect-ing some of them," Mr. Daveler declared. de-clared. VAn amendment was passed, which re-erred re-erred the ordinance with all its amend-, ments to the Finance committee, and provided that the City Auditor report on the city's finances. It provided also that the City Attorney be instructed to draft an ordinance covering the recommendation recommenda-tion of the committee and the various chairmen who were to confer with the committee. The ordinance was ordered to be presented to the Council a week from Monday. The vote on the amendment amend-ment was 11 to 2. The Finance committee will hold & meeting Wednesday afternoon at the Auditor's office to give some study ta the salary question, and decide whether there is any possibility of increasing salaries all along the line. |
