Watson, an undertaker In this city, was berun la the District court this morning:. In the absence of Jude Horse, who had not arrived from I the East at the opening- of court, Jude Steward took the bench in the criminal division. The venire of Jurors were nearly all present and District Attorney Attor-ney Elchnor asked to be permitted to examine the talesmen on their voir dire. Of the thirty-flve men who had been ; subpoenaed as Jurcrs, twer.ty-six were present. Of the nine who were not on hand to answer to their names, four could not be found by the fherl.T and five who had been notif.ed to be present failed toJJrpear. Out of the twenty-eix left who were examined on their statutory statu-tory qua'.if.cations, only twelve were sworn and accepted. The namc-s of those accepted are as follows: W. C. B. Allen. Lindsay Brady. George T. Dansie, George W. Webster, Georg T. Palmer, George. Klenke, Fam Kaney. George B. Freeze. John E. Cox, Charles B. Rand, Joseph M. Holt and George W. Keel. District Attorney Elchnor was the only attorney of either side In the courtroom. The defendant was present and Interested in the examination of the Jurors. The counsel for the defense were conspicuous for their absence. It will be several days before the Jury will have been Impaneled and the trial of the case Is taken up. Judge O. W. Powers has been retained re-tained by Mrs. Watson, widow of Ellison's El-lison's victim, to assist Mr. Elchnor In the prosecution of the case. The retention of Judge Powers by Mrs. Watson Is In compliance with a request made by Mr. Watson upon his deathbed. Court was adjourned until 10 o'clock tomorrow morning, when Judge Morse will be upon the bench. |
