Show HEW PASTOR TALKS OF MODERH HMTAKIANIS51 "Modern Unltarlanlsm" was the subject sub-ject discussed by the Rev. F. F. 'Eddy, who preached his first sermon as pastor of the Unitarian. society of Salt Lake Sunday. His sermon wassa scholarly setting forth of the principles of Unl-t&rianlsm, Unl-t&rianlsm, dear and concise, and won much favorable comment. In his address Mr. Eddy said that the great negations of his faith were: - "First The church Is not of divine Institution, but is of human origin. This has been established by research. "Second The attitude toward creeds. We deny that creeds are the Inevitable expression of religion. There Is no sanctity In a creed that puts down In black and white, what a man must believe. be-lieve. ' "Third Unitarians cannot hold that revelations in the Scriptures were divinely di-vinely Inspired. We read the Bible as an example of human literature. We , read also of the fragmentary glimpses of the life work of Jesus Christ, . the marvelous Nasarene. ' "Fourth We have a different conception concep-tion of the work of Jesus. We deny that he was crucified for the sins of mankind. 'In these negations we have seemed to cast aside all that - Christians have thought was essential to the spirit of life and religion. But now that we have passed through the negative epoch, we have come to the great affirmation affir-mation that underlies the whole spirit of truth. We believe In a great force underlying all things; a force that makes for righteousness. This Is the force that has brought man up from a brute. This has brought him to write new Bibles, that has created new faiths, and brought to light new prophets, new Saviors. It all Is an expression and a working out of the spirit of truth. - "The beauty and glory of modern Unltarianlsm Is that we have passed through the negative epoch 'and come to the great affirmation, an epoch of reconstructive thought. ' The coming epoch is one of reconstruction, of building build-ing up that which is fo take the place of all that has been destroyed." |
