Show HIGHER IN WALLSTREET NEW YORK. Jan. 9. There was a fair d:stributlon of opening orders today which lifted stocks quite uniformly a moderate fraction. St Paul led with a rise of 4-The 4-The few declines were among the specialties, spe-cialties, Smelting losing a point. The upward course of prices was interrupted inter-rupted for a while by the weakness of the local traction group, especially the Metropolitan Metro-politan stocks, which declined IV- A large portion of the opening advances In other stocks was lost, but tbe market rallied vigorously and the highest prices of the hour were made. Union Pacific was purchased pur-chased in large blocks, the price touching 114, St Paul. Rock Island. Baltimore & Ohio. Missouri Pacific. Reading. Southern Railway, National Railroad of Mexico preferred. Amalgamated Copper. Tennessee Tennes-see Coal, Consolidated Gas and the United States Steel stocks advanced 1 to Smelting recovered Jts Intitial loss and the Metropolitan stocks also recovered fully. Prices were held firmly by the strength of Individual stocks. Illinois Central was lifted SH. Manhattan 2. Louisville- & Nashville Wi United States Rubber 1. the preferred 1V4 and Pennsylvania, Kansas City Southern and Brooklyn Transit 1. Among less active stocks Cleveland A Pittsburg made a gain of 6. New Haven 3 and Pullman 2Vi- Republic Steel preferred lost 1. Bonds were steady at noon. Speculation quieted down considerably, but the high prices of the morning were well maintained.
