Show FIGHT OVER STATEHOOD Unltlig of Arizona and ; New Mexico Bone ef Contention. - ' WASHINGTON. Jan. . The Joint Statehood': bill will continue -to -be the principal topic of disc us akin In ths Senate Sen-ate during the present week,' but other measures will receive attention each day ' during the morning hour, Including the ' ; omnibus claims bill. . for which Senator . Warren stands sponsor.' The bUl comprises com-prises more than 200 pages, but the Senator Sen-ator already has succeeded In having It read by utilising odd hours, and thus has put a large and important' part of the V. work of consideration to the rear. , Discussion of the Statehood question , will begin on Mondoy with a speech' by Senator Morgan, and be will be followed by ether opposing Senatora The present ' plan of th opposition is to keep the dis- cusslon going until some Of the appropriation appropria-tion bills are reported and It becomes neo : essary to take them up; or. if this Is . postponed too Ions, to' displace ths bill with the pure food bill. Falling in all these expedients, probably they will seek ' a compromise. - The only real fight Is against the onttlng I - of Arisona and New Mexico, and there is talk of eliminating those Territories1 entirely from the Statehood proposition. It is believed if this were done ths bill for the consolidation of Oklahoma and Indian Territory would pass. Thus far there has been no conference - cf oppomlns; factions on the subject,- and i '. probably little will be done to change the I present status so -Jons; as the leaders are ' anxious to keep other matters in the i background, as sppears to be the case at present.' .' t - . f : j ,' |
