Show TAXDODGERS ARE SCORED Teachers Declare the Big Owners Paj oa Too Small Assessments. The teachers of the public schools held an interesting and well-attended meeting In Barratt hall last night for the purpose of deciding on some course of action with regard to the curtailment curtail-ment of the school term. The first step taken was to provide for permanent organization and a meeting will be held Monday to accomplish accom-plish this. The meeting will be held at the west side high school at 2 o'clock. A committee was appointed to prepare constitution and by-laws in the interim. The meeting was presided over by Mrs. K. H. Parsons. Superintendent Christensen said that greater sums should be set aside for school work, which deserved equal consideration with Judges' salaries and municipal Improvements. He presented figures to show that the schools could not be kept open more than eight months unless tax conditions condi-tions were materially changed. Mr. Christensen said that the organization's first duty should be to investigate present pres-ent assessment methods, declaring that big property-holders keep down their assessments to a low figure. He cited a case where the owners of a business property valued at $150,000 paid taxes on an assessment of $30,000. A committee meeting was called for 4 o'clock this afternoon at the city and county building. , . |
