Show MORE LIGHT SHED ON ' BOUNTY FRAUD MATTER The bounty fraud still continues to be the subject of searching Investigation by the Salt Lake and Weber county of- fleers. No new arrests were mad Wednesday for the reason that the officers of-ficers could not locate the men. A complaint charging David B. Davles. the former " Deputy Clerk In the Salt Lake office, with obtaining money under un-der false pretenses, was sworn to late Wednesday afternoon by Deputy Sheriff Sher-iff Axel Steele. The complaint charges Davles with having secured from the Clerk of Salt Lake county the Bum of $372 by falsely and fraudulently representing repre-senting that certain animals known as coyotes, wildcats, mountain Hons and bear had been killed by one Frank Jones, alias John Ward, In the State of Utah, within sixty days prior to December De-cember 23. 1904. upon which date the money Is alleged to have been secured. John M. Lee, a bartender In the Oxford Ox-ford cafe at Ogden, made a statement to Sheriff Bailey and the District Attorney Attor-ney Wednesday in which he said that he had signed for and cashed certificates certifi-cates for the amount of $788.50 within the last few months. This he said he had done at the request of Deputy Clerk W. R. Swan, who would give him $5 or $10 each time for the work he did.' Lee said that Swan represented to him that the hides, none of which Lee ever saw, belonged to a friend of his who was out at a point near the Promontory and could not come to town. It is thought likely that more complaints com-plaints will be filed against Swan as a result of Lee's statement. That the entire en-tire matter will be the subject of thorough thor-ough Investigation by the Legislature Is the statement of members of both branches. Senator Bennlon will Introduce Intro-duce a resolution in the Senate Thursday Thurs-day calling upon the State Auditor to furnish the committee with the amount of certificates Issued by each County Clerk In the State since the passage of the law. with the name of each person to whom they were issued. It Is said that this will be followed later by a thorough investigation of the offices of the County Clerks In which there Is evidence of fraud. No' action aa yet has been taken by theJounty Commissioners of Salt Lake county looking toward an Investigation of the Clerk's office In this county. The matter Is now under consideration by the Commissioners.- A demand was made In Ogden Wednesday that a grand Jury be Impaneled Im-paneled to Investigate the entire matter mat-ter In Weber county. Judge Howell has not yet decided whether he will call a ppeclal grand Jury. |
