Show Right Kiisei of Jastice. We congratulate Weber county on having a brand of justice that is simon pure. Monday a hold-up man was sentenced by Judge Howell. He was given twenty years in the penitentiary. peniten-tiary. That sentence will do a great deal of good. It may be severe punishment for the convict, but it will deter others from taking up the pursuit Of. robbing rob-bing people. The sentence is not too severe. A man who will enter a business p'lace or a dwelling to rob people at the point of a revolver stands ready to commit murder. He takes his life in his hands and he will kill others rather than lose it. He is a dangerous member of society, a murderer In intent if not in deed, and the law should deal with him as severely as it would with a murderer. Judge Howell has set an example that is worthy rf being followed. He had the assistance of police and sheriffs who furnished the evidence to convict The case hi one that should come to the notice of all officers of the law in Utah. It is a mistake to be merciful to sucITcriminaR It is better for them and every one else to shut them up for a long term of years. A short term does not reform them, and it gives little protection to society. so-ciety. . v If a few more hold-up men are convicted and1 given long sentences it will do much to free citizens cf the peril that has been menacing them of late. |
