Show Lawbreakers Hilled as Martyrs and Hsross The official organ of the lawbreakers is determined deter-mined to make heroes and martyrs of the men who confessed that they were deliberately defying and violating the laws of Utah and had decided to continue con-tinue to hreak the statutes. And what will be the solution of this problem in which the majesty of the law is at stake? Once before the head of the church had the Legislature Leg-islature pass a law which was designed to prevent prosecution of the offense of which he was guilty then, and of which he has been guilty ever since. Will the head of' the church have the general assembly as-sembly called together and insist that the laws be so amended that he may continue to maintain relations rela-tions which the statutes now declare to be unlawful? unlaw-ful? If he does not take this course he must continue to live in defiance of the law and, of course, as the people of Utah have generously condoned the offense of-fense of which President Smith is continuously guilty, they will gladly consent to the statutes being be-ing changed so that he may live in the same old way and not be bothered by such an old thing as the law. But if we are to do this every other man in Utah who is guilty of the same offense must also be given immunity from prosecution. IN OTHER WORDS, WE MUST LET THE BARS DOWN AND THROW MORALITY TO THE DOGS. |
